Additional Information

A reference guide to terminology, information architecture principles, and interface expectations for users of the Daflevok service.

Terminology used within the Daflevok service

The Daflevok interface uses a specific set of terms consistently across its sections. Understanding what these terms mean within the platform will help users navigate the service more effectively.

Classification structure

The classification structure is the organising framework that determines how information items are grouped, labelled, and linked within the Daflevok interface. It is defined based on the subject relationships between items rather than on the order in which they were added to the system.

Reference entry

A reference entry is a discrete piece of information presented within a category of the classification structure. Each entry is assigned to exactly one primary category. It may be associated with adjacent categories where a subject relationship exists.

Review section

A review section is an area of the interface that presents a set of related reference entries under a common heading. Review sections correspond directly to categories in the classification structure. Users navigate between review sections using the platform's category navigation.

Structured observation

A structured observation is a note or summary derived from the available reference material that presents a pattern, relationship, or characteristic identified within the information set. Structured observations are distinct from reference entries: they summarise rather than document. They are clearly labelled as observations and should not be treated as independently verified conclusions.

Access enquiry

An access enquiry is a formal request submitted through the enquiry form for access to a restricted area of the Daflevok service. Access enquiries are reviewed individually. Submitting an enquiry does not guarantee access, and the outcome depends on the assessment carried out by the support team.

Support team

The support team refers to the staff at Daflevok Pty Ltd responsible for reviewing enquiries, responding to user questions, and maintaining the reference content within the service.

Information architecture principles

The Daflevok service is built around several principles that govern how information is arranged and presented. These principles are not hidden from users; they are reflected directly in the structure of the interface.

Single-placement classification

Each reference entry is assigned to one primary category. This prevents the same item from appearing in multiple sections in a way that would make the classification structure unclear. Where an item is relevant to more than one category, cross-references are used rather than duplicating the entry.

Consistent labelling

Category names and entry headings follow a consistent naming convention across the entire platform. A label used in one section of the interface means the same thing in every other section. This consistency is maintained as the reference set grows and the classification structure is updated.

Separation of explanation and reference

The Daflevok interface distinguishes between explanatory material (text that describes what a category contains or why a classification was made) and reference material (the actual information entries). Users can choose to read explanatory content or navigate directly to the reference entries, depending on their familiarity with the subject area.

Transparent limitations

Where the classification structure has gaps, where entries have not been independently verified, or where the scope of a category is uncertain, this is stated within the interface. The service does not present incomplete or provisional information as definitive without qualification.

What to expect from the user interface

New users approaching the Daflevok interface for the first time can expect the following experience:

  • A navigation structure that reflects the classification hierarchy, with primary categories at the top level and sub-categories accessible from within each section.
  • Section pages that begin with a brief explanatory note before presenting the reference entries for that category.
  • Consistent visual formatting across all sections, with headings, entry titles, and reference text distinguished by their position and typographic treatment.
  • Labels indicating where entries have not been independently verified or where content was last reviewed.
  • Access prompts for restricted sections, directing users to the enquiry form if they wish to request access.

The interface is designed to be navigable without prior training. Users familiar with structured reference materials such as technical documentation, curated databases, or organised report sets will find the layout familiar. Users new to structured information tools will find explanatory material within each section.

Updates to the reference set

The information available through the Daflevok service is updated periodically as new reference material becomes available or as existing entries are revised. Users should not assume that an item's presence in the platform reflects its current state without checking the entry's review date where one is shown.

If you notice that an entry appears to contain outdated or inconsistent information, you can submit a note through the enquiry form using the "Clarification about reference material" request type.
